DRVC is a fully equipped veterinary surgery. Our highly skilled & experienced veterinary surgeons can perform almost any operation on site from routine de-sexing to complex orthopaedic procedures like knee reconstructions, femoral head arthroplasty and open fractures. All animals having invasive surgical procedures at DRVC receive a pain killing injection if it is safe to do so! In fact, all animals undergoing de-sexing procedures have a pain relieving injection at no extra charge (including horses).

At DRVC we tailor our anaesthetics to be as safe as possible for your pet/farm animal. For all animals undergoing anaesthesia we recommend a pre-anaesthetic blood screen with our in-house biochemistry analyser. The screen checks some liver enzymes, kidney enzymes, protein and glucose levels as well as whether the animal is anaemic or dehydrated. If able to be obtained we also test the patients urine for kidney function, blood, pH, glucose, ketones and a host of other indicators of disease. Special induction agents can be used on sensitive breeds, heart disease patients, old animals, very young animals and other at risk patients. Birds/small pets are less likely to succumb to the anaesthesia because we use isofluorane gas.

Our dental facilities include an ultrasonic scaler & polisher, high-speed dental burrs and numerous manual instruments to minimize trauma during dental procedures. For the safety of the patient and our staff, virtually all animals undergoing dental procedures need to be under a general anaesthetic. After the teeth have been cleaned & polished we recommend abrasive food (like RAW bones, prescription t/d food, dentabones, etc) as well as daily brushing (with special dog/cat toothpaste) to maintain oral hygiene.

We pride ourselves on the quality of x-rays that can be produced with our equipment. We have high definition screens in our x-ray cassettes and use high-speed films to produce exceptional quality x-ray films. Our daylight (no darkroom required) developer ensures we have perfectly dry films to read in a minimum amount of time & we can guarantee that the image will be preserved forever. The quality is so good that the films can be scanned & sent via e-mail to specialists if required. Equine x-rays can be done on site (preferable) or under certain circumstances our portable machine can be taken to a client's stable.

Accurate administration of intra-venous fluids can be achieved with our new infusion facilities. Special fluids for head trauma patients, those in need of plasma, expanders or blood products, dextrose or hypertonic solutions can be administered if required.

Our patients can be hospitalized in-house including overnight when they will be regularly checked by our veterinarians, especially intensive care patients.

Chemotherapy can be performed at our surgery under certain conditions. We also have access to a specialized radiation unit in a nearby surgery to treat cats with hyperthyroidism.

Sometimes certain cases will require specialist veterinary attention. We can refer to a complete range of specialty veterinary services in Melbourne, including eye specialists, oncologists (cancer patients), animal behaviour experts, reproductive/mating services, specialist surgeons and medical veterinarians. After a referral the specialist will send us a report of the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of the referred patient. Usually follow up treatment or check ups can be done at our surgery.

Holistic or alternative veterinary medicine can be arranged via our surgery. There are a number of naturopaths, herbalists, homeopaths, osteopaths, etc living locally that have knowledge of natural medicine for animals. Our veterinarians can also offer some alternative treatments and referrals if required for acupuncture, bowen therapy, raki, etc. There are numerous veterinary practitioners in Melbourne with advanced training in these fields.
